Food crawl in Iloilo: A must checklist! Lazy Susan

I’ve only been to four other countries outside of the Philippines - Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia. During a Buddhist retreat in Taiwan, I had the opportunity to travel coast to coast - Yilan in the South, to Kaohsiung in the North, and in the capital city, Taipei.

In my forty days in Taiwan, or previously known as Formosa (“Beautiful island”), what stood out to me was the food. The sprawling night markets, street food, quaint restaurants, and even the purely vegetarian cuisine of the Buddhist temples, everything was a feast for the senses. I have not tasted anything bad at all. Similar to Filipinos, my experience with the Taiwanese is that they love food and express hospitality through food.

When I heard that a Taiwanese-inspired restaurant was opening online in 2020, I was excited. Finally, a taste of Taiwan right in Iloilo!

Lazy Susan started as an online business in January 2021, offering its delicious Taiwanese dishes to  Ilonggos through take-out and delivery. They quickly gained a loyal following for their authentic flavors and friendly service. Lazy Susan’s dishes were prepared in a home kitchen-commissary located at the 4th main street of Alta Tierra Village, Jaro, Iloilo City.

In 2023, Lazy Susan took the next step and opened its first physical store in SM City Iloilo. The new store has been a success, and Lazy Susan is now a popular destination for Ilonggos looking for a taste of Taiwan.

One of my favorite dishes and their classic is the Sichuan noodles with the unique Sichuan sauce, that makes Lazy Susan stand out. The blend of spicy, sweet, and savory flavors makes the food more memorable.

I was also delighted to find that they serve Taiwanese pancakes, a street food favorite in Taiwan! The Taiwanese version of this breakfast favorite is savory, crispy, and chewy, made more flavorful with scallions and herbs. For those looking for a small meal or snack, the baos and buns are just right.

Lazy Susan’s transition is a story of resilience and the power of creativity in food. I expect more innovations and unexpected dishes in the future.

Lazy Susan is located in the Northwing Foodhall at SM City Iloilo, Mandurriao, Iloilo City. They are open daily, 10 am - 10 pm.
