Flavors of Iloilo wins Best Book on Food for 41st National Book Awards

Flavors of Iloilo, a cookbook celebrating the rich culinary heritage of Iloilo and Western Visayas, has won the Best Book on Food award at the 41st National Book Awards. The winners were announced in December 9, 2023. The book is authored by renowned Ilonggo Chef Rafael "Tibong" Jardeleza, Jr. This prestigious award is given annually by the National Book Development Board (NBDB) and the Manila Critics Circle (MCC) to recognize outstanding Filipino literary works.

Flavors of Iloilo is a collection of recipes from traditional Ilonggo dishes to modern interpretations with a local twist. The cookbook is also a celebration of Iloilo's vibrant culture and history.

Kasingkasing Press submitted the nomination for this award. The other books nominated for the same category of Best Book on Food are Filipino Vegan: Recipes and stories to stir up Filipino Flavors and Perspectives by RG Enriquez Diez and published by Anvil Publishing; and My Ranaw Kitchen Lab: Food for Peace in Muslim Mindanao by Assad Baunto and published by Pawikan Press.

The book was published by the Iloilo City Government in partnership with the Iloilo Festivals Foundation, Inc. (IFFI). The project was spearheaded by Iloilo City First Lady Rosalie S. Treñas. The editorial team includes:

Flavors of Iloilo is a truly special book that showcases the best of Ilonggo cuisine and has a good chance to win this category.

The awarding ceremony is expected to be on February 2024.

This nomination is also a significant milestone that coincides with Iloilo City now designated as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy

The National Book Development Board (NBDB) is a government agency that promotes the development of the Philippine book industry. The Manila Critics Circle (MCC) is a professional organization of Filipino literary critics.
